Prop Firm or Personal Futures Account: Which Should You Trade?

How capital, risk, rules and costs compare between a prop firm account and your own brokerage futures account.

Your money at risk

With a prop firm, your maximum loss is usually the fees you pay. With a personal account, you can lose your deposit, and futures losses can exceed it. That's the biggest difference.

Rules vs freedom

Prop accounts come with drawdowns, daily limits and sometimes consistency or news rules. A personal account has no firm rules, only your broker's margin requirements. Some traders find prop rules helpful structure; others find them restrictive.

What you keep

In a personal account you keep all profit. In a prop account you keep your split after fees. Hypothetical: $1,000 profit at a 90% split is $900, minus whatever you paid for the account.

A common path

Many traders build consistency in prop evaluations with limited downside, then decide later whether to trade their own capital. There's no single right answer; pick what fits your savings and discipline.
