News trading rules in prop firms
CPI, NFP and FOMC can move NQ hundreds of points in seconds. Here's what each firm allows — and why even allowed news trades can wreck your drawdown. Education only — not financial advice.
News rules by firm
Apex Trader Funding
Trading during news is allowed for your normal strategy. "News trading" strategies that chase the market or place orders on both sides to gamble the outcome are not allowed, and hedging (long and short at once) is prohibited.
Official source ↗TradeDay
Tier 1 releases banned: open positions auto-liquidated 2 minutes before, trading reopens 2 minutes after. Accidental trades don't fail you.
Official source ↗DayTraders
News trading allowed (eval and Pro), but not recommended — losses from fast markets or lag aren't covered.
Official source ↗Top One Futures
News trading allowed. Exception: Elite ACCESS funded accounts — no trades 2 minutes before or after high-impact news.
Official source ↗Outdated info warning: older Apex support pages (support.atf.com) describe a stricter, blanket news-trading ban. That page is outdated — the Apex rule above comes from Apex's current help center, checked Oct 31, 2026.
Rules change — confirm before you trade a release. Codes and links in the best futures prop firms guide.
How slippage eats your buffer
MNQ is $2 per point. Illustrative example — actual slippage varies. On intraday trailing accounts, a fast spike in your favor can also lift your floor before price snaps back. Model it in the drawdown calculator and read trailing drawdown explained.
Release-day checklist
- Check the calendar below every morning for high-impact US events.
- If your firm has a 2-minute rule, be flat at least a few minutes earlier.
- If you trade through news, cut size so a 3× slipped stop still fits your daily limit.
- Never place straddle/bracket "news bets" where a firm prohibits them.

FAQ
Can you trade news with a prop firm?
Depends on the firm. Of EVX's partners, DayTraders, Top One Futures and Bulenox allow it; TradeDay blocks Tier 1 releases; Apex allows news trading with your normal strategy but bans two-sided or market-chasing news bets.
What is the 2-minute news rule?
Some firms require you to be flat from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after a major release. TradeDay auto-liquidates positions; Top One applies it on Elite ACCESS funded accounts.
What are red-folder news events?
High-impact releases such as CPI, NFP (jobs report) and FOMC rate decisions. They're marked high importance on the economic calendar.
Why is news trading risky on a prop account?
Spreads widen and stops can fill far from your price. One slipped stop can use a large share of a $2,000 trailing drawdown.
Do these rules change?
Yes. Firms update news policies — always confirm on the firm's help center before trading a release.
