What Are the Best Times to Trade NQ and ES Futures?
The busiest index futures sessions, why midday chop costs evaluation accounts, and why you must know your firm's closing time.
The New York open (9:30–11:00 AM ET)
When US stocks open, volume and movement in NQ and ES jump. This is where many of the cleanest moves of the day happen — and also the fastest losses, so keep size small.
The midday lunch chop (around 11:30 AM–1:30 PM ET)
Volume usually dries up around lunch and price can whip back and forth. Many traders lose their gains here by forcing trades. Sitting out is a valid strategy.
The afternoon session (2:00–4:00 PM ET)
Activity often picks back up into the stock market close. Trends from the morning can continue, but moves can also reverse sharply near the close.
Know your firm's end-of-day close time
Most futures prop firms require you to be flat before a set time each afternoon, and holding past it can break a rule. The exact time differs by firm — check your firm's rules before you trade late in the day.
