How Do You Size Options Trades on a Prop Firm Loss Limit?

A simple way to size SPY and QQQ options trades so one bad day doesn't end your options prop firm evaluation.

Start with your real cushion

Your account size isn't your risk budget — your loss limit is. On a 50K options plan with a $1,500 loss limit, that $1,500 is everything you can lose before the account ends. Size every trade around that number, not the $50,000 label.

Risk a small slice per trade

A common approach is risking a small percentage of the cushion per idea. Hypothetical: risking 10% of a $1,500 limit is $150 per trade. If you buy a contract at $1.50 ($150 per contract) and plan to exit at $0.75, your risk is $75 per contract, so two contracts fits the $150 plan.

Remember premium can go to zero

Bought options can lose their full premium, and short-dated contracts lose value fast from time decay. If you won't use a hard exit, treat the full premium as your risk. Wide bid/ask spreads on illiquid strikes also add hidden cost on every fill.

Know how your limit trails

With an intraday trailing limit, open profits can raise the threshold before you lock them in. End-of-day trailing only updates on the close, which gives more room during the session. Vanquish offers both styles on its 50K plans — pick the one that matches how you manage winners.
